Vaccine hesitancy has been a relevant topic of scientific discussion over the last decade, with the rise of the so-called “anti-vax” movement which encourages parents to not vaccinate their children on claims that the contents of the vaccines will cause mental deficiencies such as autism. The matter has become far more pressing in the last year given the current COVID-19 pandemic. Misinformation and fearmongering regarding the dangers of the covid19 mRNA vaccines are the most vicious “anti-vax” rhetoric to date.
Various socioeconomic factors are also said to contribute to vaccine hesitancy, alongside a lack of general education pertaining to the function of vaccines (consider the popular and somewhat bastardized understanding of “vaccines are dead viruses”).
